This unassuming plaque, nestled amongst the bustling streets of Prague, holds the story of a man named Max Švabinsky. It marks the house where he resided from 1930 until his death in 1962.

Max Švabinsky was a Czech painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and professor at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Prague. His work is considered to be a significant contribution to the history of Czech painting, particularly during the first half of the 20th century. This simple facade, however, hides a rich and fascinating story that spans across decades and artistic movements.

Born in Kroměříž in 1873, Švabinsky’s early works reflected the trends of Plein Air Realism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau. His early influences were evident in his portraits and intimate family scenes. His most famous works often drew inspiration from the picturesque landscape that surrounded his home in Kozlov, near Česká Třebová.

Known for his exceptional skill in graphic art, Švabinsky was appointed a professor at the Prague Academy in 1910. During his career he created murals for the Municipal House in Prague, extended his range to wood engraving, and designed postage stamps and banknotes.

His talent for detail and his love of nature are exemplified in his woodcuts from the “Paradise Sonata” collection. The vibrant colours and intricate designs created a dream-like vision of lush vegetation and paradise, a testament to the power of his imagination and artistic talent.

This inconspicuous plaque stands as a reminder of a remarkable artist whose work transcended artistic boundaries, leaving a lasting impact on the Czech art world. As you stand here, it’s easy to imagine Max Švabinsky, brush in hand, capturing the essence of the world around him in his art. His legacy lives on, not only in his work but also in the stories that these quiet streets tell, whispering tales of a talented artist who brought the world to life through his art.
