“Imagine a container, remotely controlled.” That’s Mawan Port for you. It stands as the first 5G smart port in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Mawan Port underwent a significant upgrade. The three-year renovation transformed it into a modern marvel. It now features two container berths designed for 200,000-ton ships.
Covering 983600 square meters, Mawan is no ordinary port. Its design allows it to handle 3 million TEUs a year. TEUs are twenty-foot equivalent units.
The port uses China Merchants ePort smart technology. This includes artificial intelligence. The port also utilizes the BeiDou positioning system. Automation and blockchain are key parts too. Low-carbon technologies are important here.
During the opening, a container was moved remotely. It was loaded onto a driverless truck. The truck followed a programmed route to the container yard. A crane then lifted it. The container was placed in its designated spot. This shows how Mawan reduces on-site staff and safety risks.
Mawan aims to cut down on harmful emissions. It expects to reduce nitrogen dioxide by 1350 tons. Carbon monoxide should decrease by 450 tons. Sulfur dioxide could fall by 15 tons.
The port’s smart tech improves customs efficiency. Shenzhen Customs can oversee container handling online. This includes loading, unloading, inspections and fee settlements.
Mawan lies on the east bank of the Pearl River. It’s just north of Chiwan.
The maximum tidal current velocity in Mawan is 1.48 m/s. This flows to 150 degrees. The max ebb current velocity is 1.91 m/s. This flows to 350 degrees.
The port is linked to the Guangzhou-Shenzhen railway. Highways connect it to the main Guangzhou-Shenzhen Highway. It has access to Pearl River ports.
Shenzhen Port has nine ports. These include Shekou, Chiwan and Mawan. By 2004, it had 141 berths above 500 tons.
