High above the bustling streets of São Paulo sits Mauá a city with a rich and captivating history. Its name derived from the Tupi language means “elevated” a fitting description for its location and its remarkable rise.
Mauá wasn’t always a municipality. It began as a small village known as Pilar. This humble settlement grew around a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pilar. Early settlers like Antônio Franco da Rocha and “Captain João” established themselves here. Lourenço Pinto even built a sugar mill and warehouse fueling the village’s modest growth. Joaquim Rosa added to the community’s burgeoning economy by trading timber.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1867 with the construction of the Santos-Jundiaí Railway. This ambitious project spearheaded by Irineu Evangelista de Souza the Baron of Mauá transformed the region. The railway station in Pilar opened in 1883. This event triggered significant growth around the station.
The village’s prosperity attracted many. It eventually outgrew its humble beginnings. In 1934 Mauá became a district. It belonged to São Bernardo do Campo then later to Santo André. Locals felt neglected by Santo André’s city government. A movement for independence emerged led by Egmont Fink.
The people of Mauá yearned for self-governance. In 1953 a plebiscite was held. The overwhelming majority voted for emancipation. This led to the creation of the municipality of Mauá on December 30 1953. The city’s official administrative start date is January 1 1954. However the city council chose December 8 the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady the city’s patron saint as Mauá’s official founding date.
Mauá became known as the “Capital of Porcelain” due to its thriving ceramics and pottery industry. The Capuava and Sertãozinho industrial centers boomed. A significant petrochemical complex including a Petrobras refinery further solidified Mauá’s industrial prominence.
