“Ever wondered where faith meets community in São Paulo?” Here we are at the Matriz Sagrada Família. This church stands as a testament to the devotion of its parishioners. It also stands as a beacon of hope in the Chácara Santo Antônio neighborhood.
The story of Matriz Sagrada Família begins humbly. The first chapel was constructed using eucalyptus wood. Imagine a simple yet beautiful structure. It stood amidst a large lawn. Colored glass windows and doors adorned its sides. This original chapel served a small community. It was once connected to the Paróquia Verbo Divino.
Change came. The eucalyptus chapel was torn down. Father Antonio Martins Torres laid the cornerstone for a new church. Bishop Dom Fernando Antônio Figueiredo was present. Father Torres was then transferred to Angola. Father Celso Zanella took his place. He celebrated Mass in the new church even before its completion. The floor was still dirt.
Father Eugênio La Barbera then became the pastor. He oversaw the finishing touches. Finally the Sagrada Família became an independent parish. This happened by episcopal decree on May 27 1994.
Today the Matriz Sagrada Família continues to thrive. Monsignor Paulo Sérgio Prado currently leads the parish. He took office on January 3 2016. Father Renato Gonçalves da Silva serves as the vicar.
The church offers several services. Masses occur throughout the week. Confessions are heard Tuesday through Friday. The parish also has active groups. These include the Rosary group and the Men’s and Women’s Terço groups.
