The Mendes de Almeida family brought a cherished image of Saint John Climacus from Portugal. This 6th-century Christian monk, residing on Mount Sinai, was renowned for his profound faith and writings on the steps to heaven. João Mendes de Almeida Junior, fueled by his family’s devotion to the saint, harbored a dream. He envisioned a chapel honoring São João Clímaco. In 1892, with friend Francisco Caropreso, they secured permission and, with the support of benefactors, built the chapel on their land. The Matriz Paroquial São João Clímaco we see today stemmed from this humble beginning. People flocked to the chapel, strengthening their faith. The area surrounding the chapel adopted the saint’s name, becoming the bairro of São João Clímaco. Officially, Matriz Paroquial São João Clímaco was established on June 29, 1953. This marked the start of construction for the current church structure. Over the years, various priests guided the community, nurturing their faith and mission. Today, Matriz Paroquial São João Clímaco stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the vision of one family.
