Matraville Sports High School first opened its doors in 1960 as Matraville High School. The school wasn’t always located here on Anzac Parade. The initial students attended classes at Daceyville Public School and later Gardeners Road Public School due to funding delays. Imagine those first classes, held in borrowed spaces, while the sandy hills of Matraville awaited their new occupants. Matraville Sports High School officially moved to its current location in 1962. The school was officially opened by then NSW Premier Bob Heffron in 1963. Heffron was instrumental in establishing the school as co-educational, a progressive move in a time of largely sex-segregated education. Matraville Sports High School quickly gained recognition for its sporting prowess, particularly in rugby. Geoff Mould, a sports master and coach, cultivated this legacy, fostering a “great rugby nursery”. The school’s rugby teams have consistently dominated competitions, clinching the Waratah Shield multiple times and the ARL Schoolboy Cup. In 2001, the school’s dedication to sports led to its official designation as Matraville Sports High School. Today, Matraville Sports High School caters to approximately 300 students. It offers a Talented Sports Program, nurturing future athletes while maintaining a strong academic focus. The school’s alumni include prominent figures like former NSW Premier Bob Carr. Many professional athletes, especially in rugby league and rugby union, also started their journey here. Matraville Sports High School continues to inspire young athletes. It offers a supportive environment for students to pursue both academic and athletic excellence. The legacy of champions built here continues to inspire generations of students to reach their full potential.
