At Masjid Ummah, echoes of a remarkable journey whisper through the air. This mosque, nestled in the heart of Cape Town, holds a story of resilience and devotion. It all began with a man named Tuan Guru, also known as Imam Abdullah Qadhu Abdus Salaam. Born into royalty in Tidore, Indonesia, Tuan Guru led resistance against Dutch invaders in the 1700s. Captured and stripped of his Quran, he was exiled to Robben Island in 1780. The Dutch believed they had silenced his faith, but Tuan Guru had committed the entire Quran to memory. During his 12 years of imprisonment, he painstakingly rewrote the holy book from memory, creating two copies that still exist today. One of these handwritten Qurans is displayed within Masjid Ummah itself. Upon his release in 1792, at the age of 81, Tuan Guru’s spirit remained unbroken. He settled in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap area and established the first madrasa, or Islamic school. He taught Islam and Arabic to freed slaves. In 1794, despite Islam being a criminal offense at the time, Tuan Guru established Masjid Ummah, the first mosque in Southern Africa. This act of defiance laid the foundation for the Muslim community in South Africa. Tuan Guru’s legacy extends far beyond the walls of Masjid Ummah. His life is a testament to the power of faith and resilience. He dedicated his life to education and the propagation of Islam, leaving an enduring impact on the cultural landscape of South Africa. He passed away in 1807 at the age of 95, but his memory lives on within the heart of this vibrant community and the very stones of Masjid Ummah.
