Masjid Adam Islamic Center provides many services. It offers five daily prayers. Two Friday Jummah prayers are also held. Quran memorization classes are available. Both part-time and full-time options exist. Children can learn Quran in Madarsa. There are Quran learning opportunities for sisters too. Tafseer of Quran is taught here. Now I would like to share some facts about early Muslim history in Canada. The first Muslim born in Canada was James Love. He was born in Ontario in 1854. Agnes Love was his mother. She was a teenage bride of Scottish origin.
Kerim Reis was a pioneering leader in the Greater Toronto Area. He co-founded the Croatian Islamic Centre in 1973. It was at 75 Birmingham Street in Etobicoke. The building was later replaced with a new mosque. The Centre was renamed the Bosnian Islamic Centre in 1995.
The first mosque in Canada was Al Rashid Mosque. It opened in Edmonton in 1938. The Muslim population in Canada was 645 in the early 1930s. Most Muslims lived in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Edmonton had the largest Muslim community. They wanted to preserve their faith for their children.
The Islamic Foundation of Toronto was formed in 1968. A small group of Muslims met for Sunday prayers. They formed the Muslim Foundation. Dr. Fuad Sahin became the President. The organization bought the Orange Hall property. It was once home to a Scottish football team support group. It also served as a Gospel Hall.
Ontario’s first purpose-built mosque was London Muslim Mosque. It is on Oxford St. West. The first Muslim congregation started around 1901. Lebanese immigrants came to London. They started the Syrian-Lebanese Club. In the 1950s, the Canadian Moslem Benevolent Society searched for a place of worship. In 1955, they bought a house at 151 Oxford St. W. for a mosque. A fire destroyed the mosque. A new facility was built in 1964. It stands there today.
