“My rock and my fortress.” Does that motto resonate with you? It is more than just words here at Masada College. It encapsulates the spirit of this unique institution.
Masada College stands as Australia’s first Jewish international co-educational school. It is located in St Ives on Sydney’s North Shore. But the story of Masada College begins much earlier.
Back in 1962 a group of Jewish parents envisioned a Jewish education for their children. They started small with the North Shore Jewish Kindergarten. By 1966 they established Masada Primary School with just 14 students. It operated out of the North Shore Synagogue in Lindfield.
The school quickly grew. In 1982 Masada College expanded to include a high school. In 1983 the school relocated to its current Michael Faktor Campus in St Ives. The Kehillat Masada Synagogue also found its home here in 1984. Masada College consolidated all operations onto the Michael Faktor Campus in 2014.
But why the name Masada? In the early days, the founders wanted a name that reflected strength and resilience. Bob Shteinman suggested Masada. It referenced the ancient fortress in Israel. The martyrs of Masada stood strong in their beliefs. They faced overwhelming challenges. The name embodies this spirit. The school motto reflects this historical reference.
Over the years Masada College has grown. It has expanded its facilities. In 1990 the Rachael and Reuben Pelerman Centre was added. The Sir Asher Joel Synagogue was extended and upgraded in 2003. In 2024 the Senior Library underwent a major refurbishment.
Masada College is known for its academic achievements. It consistently ranks among the top schools in New South Wales. In the 2024 HSC results Masada College ranked 37th overall in New South Wales. It was the highest-ranked co-educational school on Sydney’s North Shore.
Values-based education is at the heart of Masada College. The school promotes respect, responsibility, and inclusivity. Students participate in charity initiatives and cultural events. The college integrates Jewish traditions, values, and culture into daily school life.
The Living Historians Program is a unique initiative. Year 6 and Year 10 students research individual Holocaust survivors. They present their findings to peers, parents, and community members. Holocaust survivors share their experiences with the students. This ensures the lessons of the Holocaust remain relevant.
Masada College embraces Australia’s multicultural diversity. Students participate in events like Chinese New Year. They commemorate ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
