Ever wonder what it was like in a 16th-century English village? Prepare yourself to be transported back in time as we approach the Maryland Renaissance Festival. This isn’t just a festival it’s a living, breathing Tudor village named Revel Grove.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival spans 27 acres. It is filled with artisan shops, food outlets, stages, and a jousting tiltyard. Each year, from the last weekend in August through October, the Maryland Renaissance Festival opens its gates. For nine weekends you can experience this unique realm.

Our journey begins in 1977. Jules Smith Sr., a Minnesota lawyer, established the fair. Initially, it was held near Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. In 1985, the festival moved to its current location in Crownsville.

Did you know that the Maryland Renaissance Festival originally focused on the Elizabethan era? In 1989, it shifted its focus to the reign of King Henry VIII. King Henry is currently portrayed by actor Fred Nelson.

As you walk through Revel Grove, notice the vibrant atmosphere. Melodies of minstrels fill the air. Hear the laughter of jesters. Listen to the cheers from the jousting arena. Over 1,300 participants create an authentic Tudor village. This includes 200 performers and 700 vendor employees.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival boasts eight major theaters. Also, there are four smaller stages in taverns and a children’s area. Each day, over 200 performances entertain the crowds. Enjoy jousting tournaments and falconry displays. Don’t miss the musical performances and comedic skits.

Unique to this festival is a storyline. It progresses each year through Henry VIII’s reign. This brings historical events to life.

Explore the Artisan Marketplace. Discover over 130 shops. Find jewelry, pottery, swords, and more. Artisans demonstrate their crafts.

Feeling hungry? The Maryland Renaissance Festival offers 42 food outlets. Five taverns provide a feast for the senses. Indulge in giant turkey legs and sweet funnel cakes.

One aspect that sets the Maryland Renaissance Festival apart is its strong sense of community. Artisans, performers, and visitors return each year. The festival attracts history buffs and fantasy enthusiasts. Weekends feature different themes. Pirate Weekend and Celtic Celebration are among them.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival is more than an event. It is a journey through time and a celebration of history. It’s a feast for the senses. As you leave Revel Grove, remember the sights, sounds, and tastes of this magical realm. The Maryland Renaissance Festival offers an escape from the mundane.
