Founded in 1985 Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School stands proudly in Scarborough. It’s more than just a school. It’s a unique learning environment. Mary Ward is one of only two self-directed learning schools in Ontario. This innovative approach empowers students. They shape their own educational journeys.

Each course comprises 18 units. Each unit requires about five to eight hours of work. The 18th unit typically involves a final exam worth 30% of the grade.

The teacher advisor system is a cornerstone of Mary Ward. Each student has a mentor. This mentor provides support and guidance. They meet three times a day. Bi-weekly interviews track progress. These interviews document completed units and grades. The forms are sent home for parental review.

Teachers at Mary Ward wear many hats. They plan create and evaluate course units. They also run seminars and provide individual support. Every full-time teacher is a teacher advisor. Students still attend school daily. They work on their units. They attend seminars and take tests. Multiple test versions minimize cheating. Students plan their day in custom-designed agendas. Teacher advisors check these agendas daily.
