“A sanctuary in the heart of North Sydney.” That’s how many describe Mary MacKillop Catholic Church, or as it’s more formally known, Mary MacKillop Place. This isn’t just a church. It’s a place of pilgrimage, history, and quiet reflection. Mary MacKillop Place tells the story of Australia’s first saint, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The story begins in 1883, when Mary MacKillop, banished from Adelaide, found refuge in Sydney. A kind priest, an old friend of her father, offered his home on Alma Lane in North Sydney. This home, known as Alma Cottage, became a haven for Mary and the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Mary herself described it as “beautifully situated, so retired and quiet.” The site later became a novitiate and a practice school for trainee teachers. This focus on education continues to this day at Mary MacKillop Place. In the 1990s, the site was redeveloped and renamed Mary MacKillop Place. At the heart of Mary MacKillop Place stands the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel, built in 1913 and dedicated the following year. Here, within the chapel, lies the tomb of Saint Mary MacKillop. It’s a place where pilgrims from across Australia come to pray and reflect. The chapel offers a “listening ear and heart” to those who wish to share their stories. Mary MacKillop Place is more than just a chapel and a tomb. The museum on site houses a fascinating collection of objects belonging to Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods, co-founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph. You can even explore a recreation of the 1860s Penola School House. After exploring the museum, you can relax in the café and browse the gift shop. Or take a moment for quiet contemplation in the peaceful gardens. Mary MacKillop Place is a true oasis, a place where history and spirituality intertwine, offering a unique experience for every visitor.
