“A church with a turbulent past”, you might think, gazing at the Martin-Luther-Kirche. And you wouldn’t be wrong. The Martin-Luther-Kirche that stands before you today, a simple brick structure, is not the original. This modern incarnation, built between 1962 and 1964, replaced a magnificent neo-Renaissance predecessor. Sadly, that church, built between 1904 and 1906, was completely destroyed during World War II. Look closely, and you’ll see the scars of war etched onto the surviving tower, a poignant reminder of the past. The Martin-Luther-Kirche, its tower, and the adjacent community center form a unified whole, their buildings embracing a peaceful inner courtyard. Inside, a breathtaking surprise awaits you: a colossal mural, 12 meters by 6 meters, gracing the wall behind the altar. Painted in 1995 by the artist Christos Koutsouras, it’s a testament to the enduring power of art and faith. Today, the Martin-Luther-Kirche is not just a place of worship, but a hub of activity, hosting a diverse array of events and exhibitions throughout the year.
