The campsites nestle in the woods between the Canal and the Potomac River. This provides a serene escape with many recreational opportunities.
Each of Marsden Tract’s six group campsites can accommodate up to 30 campers. Each site equips a picnic table and a fire ring. You’ll find portable toilets and potable water a short walk up the towpath. These amenities ensure a comfortable camping experience. However water might not be available during cold winter months.
Access to Marsden Tract Group Campground is by foot only. No vehicles are allowed on the towpath. You can park at Carderock Recreation Area or Angler’s Inn. Both are about a one-mile walk to the campsites. There is also a footbridge near Brickyard Rd. You can use this area to off-load gear. Overnight parking is not permitted here though.
Marsden Tract campers often enjoy hiking the Billy Goat Trail. This trail is known for its challenging rock climbs. There are also many easier woodland trails. Fishing is a popular activity in the C&O Canal and Potomac River. Be sure to get a Maryland fishing license if you’re over 16. Virginia licenses work for fishing in the Potomac.
Marsden Tract Group Campsite is south of the Great Falls of the Potomac and Mather Gorge. These natural features show the power of nature. They offer a great example of local geology.
