Is it true that crashing waves inspired Maroubra’s name? Indeed. The suburb’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “like thunder”. It refers to the sound of Maroubra’s powerful surf. Welcome to Maroubra. This beachside suburb is 10 kilometers southeast of Sydney’s central business district.
Maroubra is the largest suburb in the City of Randwick. It has a rich history shaped by indigenous heritage, shipwrecks, and surfing culture. The area was originally inhabited by the Murro-ore-dial clan of the Eora people. Maroubra comes from the clan leader’s name, Moorooboora. It means pathway to the initiation ground at Boora Point.
In 1861, Humphrey McKeon built the first British house here. McKeon Street is named after him. More settlers arrived in the 1870s. They worked at the wool scouring works at the bay’s northern end.
Maroubra made headlines in 1898. The Hereward, an iron ship, wrecked on Maroubra Beach. Gale-force winds caused the disaster. The shipwreck stayed on the beach for years. A failed attempt was made to refloat it. A coffer dam was built around the wreck. The wreck slowly washed out to sea. By 1937, only a triangle dorsal fin was visible. In 1950, Randwick Council blasted the remains. They posed a danger to surfers and swimmers. By 1967, it seemed nothing was left. However, large swells have since exposed parts of the Hereward. These portions were once thought lost forever. Hereward Street is named after this event.
Major residential development began in the 1910s. Herbert Dudley subdivided the land. He also lobbied for a tramline to Maroubra Junction. In 1912, he built Dudley’s Emporium. The tram line extended to Maroubra Beach in 1921.
Between 1925 and 1934, the Olympia Motor Speedway operated here. It was at Anzac Parade and Fitzgerald Avenue. The dangerous track caused several deaths. It closed after nine years. Coral Sea Park was announced on the site in 1947. It was completed in 1961. The park commemorates the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea.
Maroubra Beach is a National Surfing Reserve. It’s a popular spot for learning to surf. In 2005, Maroubra was involved in the Cronulla Riots. Over 100 cars were vandalized. This related to tensions between Middle Eastern and Anglo youth.
Maroubra Junction is a main shopping area. It includes Pacific Square shopping center. Dudley’s Emporium was the first shopping center here. It was built in 1912. Other shopping areas surround Maroubra Beach. McKeon Street and Marine Parade have cafes and restaurants.
Several hotels operate in Maroubra. The Glasshouse Hotel has been here since 1947. The Sands Hotel opened in 1972. The Maroubra Junction Hotel dates back to 1926. The Ocean View Tavern opened in 2010.
Maroubra has several parks. Arthur Byrne Reserve is along Maroubra Beach. Heffron Park is a large park with sports facilities.
Magic Point is a coastal headland in Maroubra. It is known for seabird watching. It is also a diving site. It protects grey nurse sharks.
