Question: Ever wondered why Marlborough is synonymous with world-class wine?

Marlborough is a region in the northeastern corner of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for its stunning landscapes and gourmet food. But it’s most famous for its wine.

Marlborough enjoys New Zealand’s highest amount of sunshine each year. This climate is perfect for grape growing. Low rainfall and warm temperatures help too. The difference between day and night temperatures is ideal.

Wine production started on a large scale in the 1970s. Now, Marlborough produces over 70% of New Zealand’s wine. Sauvignon Blanc is the king of the crop here. It pairs perfectly with local seafood.

Marlborough’s wine region is centered on Blenheim. There are over 4,000 hectares of grapes planted. Almost 300 grape growers work here. While Sauvignon Blanc is the most famous, other varieties thrive. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are also produced here. In recent years, Marlborough has become known for method traditionelle wines.

But it is not just about wine in Marlborough. The northern coast consists of flooded river valleys. These are the Marlborough Sounds. Land subsidence and melting glaciers created them about 14,000 years ago.

The four sounds each have their character. Queen Charlotte Sound is often visited. Many travelers arrive via ferry from Wellington. It passes through Queen Charlotte Sound and docks at Picton. Pelorus Sound is the largest and dotted with mussel farms. Kenepuru Sound is calm and sheltered. Mahau Sound is the smallest and emerald-hued.

According to Māori legend, the sounds were formed by a giant octopus. Polynesian explorer Kupe fought the octopus. The octopus’s tentacles formed the Marlborough Sounds.

Marlborough also has many activities. You can take cruises to view wildlife. Swimming with dolphins is an option. Water taxis can take you out for day walks. You can also do multi-day treks like the Queen Charlotte Track. Sea kayaking is another popular activity.

The Marlborough Sounds offer deep sea fishing trips. You can catch Blue Cod, Snapper, Groper and other species. Further south in Kaikoura, whale watching trips are popular. You can also see various seabirds. Swimming with dolphins or seals is possible too.

Marlborough’s sunny climate attracts many people. Warm summers and mild winters make it appealing. Sunshine averages over 2,400 hours each year.

But Marlborough’s history is not without its challenges. The Wairau Affray in 1843 frightened potential colonists. Earthquakes and severe flooding tested the settlers. Despite these challenges, Marlborough achieved separation from Nelson in 1859.

So, when you sip that glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, remember the sunshine. Remember the history. Remember the unique landscape that makes it all possible.
