In 1794 a group of German families settled in what would become Unionville. They were led by William Berczy. This is the story of Unionville Markham.

These brave pioneers faced hardship. Illness and famine struck. Many returned to New York. Those who remained built a community. They built Unionville.

Unionville’s name comes from Ira Allen White’s Union Mills. Built in 1839 the mill powered the village’s growth. The Act of Union 1840 further cemented the name. Unionville.

A railway arrived in 1871 boosting Unionville’s economy. The Toronto and Nipissing Railway connected Unionville to Toronto. This brought new opportunities and people to Unionville.

In the 1960s Unionville saw a building boom. New homes replaced old farms. Antique shops flourished for a while. Then newer businesses opened.
