Did you know that Markgrafneusiedl played a pivotal role in the Battle of Wagram? It formed the Austrian left flank. Imagine the clash of steel and the thunder of cannons echoing through this very spot. The French III Corps met fierce resistance from the IV Austrian Corps right here in Markgrafneusiedl. This quiet town was once the scene of brutal fighting.

Markgrafneusiedl boasts a rich history stretching back to at least the 11th century. Some believe it was founded by Markgraf Siegfried after reclaiming the area from the Hungarians in 1044. He initiated extensive land clearing. Markgrafneusiedl was likely among the first settlements he established. The town’s name itself reflects this noble connection.

The first official mention of Markgrafneusiedl appears in the Klosterneuburg Salbuch between 1120 and 1129. Later it fell under the rule of the Nuremberg Burggraves. A document from the Vienna City Archives shows Chadolt von Eckartsau. He was one of these Burggraves. He further granted lands in Markgrafneusiedl in 1388. After 1415 the Dukes of Austria became the feudal lords. The Herrschaft Wolkersdorf followed. A fascinating and somewhat obscure detail. The area passed to Rüdiger von Starhemberg in 1423 through inheritance. In 1542 the wife of Emperor Ferdinand I purchased the land. She then bequeathed it to the imperial hospital in Vienna.

Markgrafneusiedl’s significance extended beyond its feudal past. In 1809 the town became the decisive point in the Battle of Wagram. Evidence of this conflict remains. Look closely. You’ll find battle markers near the church ruins. The ruins of the rectory. The crypt of the parish church all bear witness to this historic event. Emperor Franz I granted Markgrafneusiedl market rights in 1820. Sadly the construction of the Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn railway line later diminished the market’s importance. It eventually closed.

Today Markgrafneusiedl stands as a testament to its enduring past. This quiet town holds a wealth of stories waiting to be uncovered. A surviving church a rectory a historic Kerphenhof all speak to the town’s multifaceted history. A local museum in a former press house showcases more of Markgrafneusiedl’s heritage. The town’s development has been shaped by battles market days noble patronage and railway expansion. It is a small village with a powerful history. A place where you can almost hear the echoes of the past. A quiet and unassuming place in Austria that holds within itself a significant historical account.
