“Torpedoes? Really?” a child’s voice piped up. We’re standing at the entrance to the Marinemuseum, located on Dänholm Island, part of Stralsund. This Marinemuseum isn’t just about dusty displays. It’s a portal to a time when this small island played a crucial role in naval history. Dänholm Island was strategically significant even during the Middle Ages, during Stralsund’s sieges. Later, it became the birthplace of the Prussian Navy. The island also housed naval forces of the German Reich and the GDR. The Marinemuseum, a branch of the Stralsund Museum, opened in 1992. It occupies a former barracks and the surrounding open-air grounds, all within the historic Sternschanze ramparts. Inside the Marinemuseum, you’ll discover original objects from military seafaring. Uniforms, equipment, weapons, and models bring the past to life. Photos, films, and documents add another layer to the story. Outside, a bright blue naval helicopter and a torpedo speedboat command attention. In 2021, the Marinemuseum opened a new exhibition: “Warships under Sail”. For its 30th anniversary in 2022, the museum launched “My Naval Museum”. This special exhibition shares the stories of individual objects through the personal perspectives of museum staff. The Marinemuseum offers a glimpse into a rich naval heritage, where every object holds a piece of the puzzle.
