Remember that time? The Sydney Harbour Control Tower. A colossal 87-metre structure. It dominated the skyline. A silent sentinel watching over Walsh Bay and Darling Harbour.

The tower opened in 1974. Part of the Darling Harbour redevelopment. It was a vital piece of Sydney’s maritime infrastructure. The Maritime Services Board built it. Its location was perfect. It overlooked all major shipping channels.

Imagine the bustling activity inside. Controllers guided vessels through the harbour’s complex waterways. Three floors buzzed with activity. A cylindrical reinforced concrete column supported a circular stainless steel and glass cabin. Think of the panoramic views from those windows! A bird’s-eye perspective on the constant ballet of ships.

For nearly four decades the Sydney Harbour Control Tower was indispensable. But the transfer of container shipping to Port Botany changed everything. In 2011 the tower closed. Its purpose fulfilled. Its reign over Sydney Harbour ended. Ownership transferred to the Barangaroo Delivery Authority. The tower’s fate was sealed. Demolition in 2016 erased it from the Sydney landscape. But its memory remains. A reminder of a bygone era of maritime control. A significant part of Sydney’s history. A symbol of a city’s evolution.
