Here stands the Mariensaule a testament to faith and resilience. It graces Am Hof square. The Mariensaule is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of Vienna’s enduring spirit.

This majestic column commemorates the end of the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683. It honors the Virgin Mary. She is depicted at its pinnacle. Erected in 1693 the Mariensaule reflects the Baroque style. Its intricate sculptures and golden accents capture the sunlight.

Emperor Ferdinand III vowed to erect a monument to the Virgin Mary. This happened if Vienna was spared from the Swedish army during the Thirty Years’ War. The army diverted its course. Ferdinand kept his promise.

The original Mariensaule was built in 1647 from marble. Johann Jakob Pock designed it. This earlier column stood as a symbol of gratitude. It mirrored the Mariensaule in Munich’s Marienplatz.

Emperor Leopold I replaced the marble Mariensaule with a bronze version in 1667. Balthasar Herold crafted the new column. Carlo Martino Carlone and Carlo Canevale completed its base. The original marble column now resides near Wernstein am Inn in Upper Austria.

The Mariensaule’s symbolism is powerful. The Virgin Mary stands atop a speared dragon. Around the base putti subdue a snake basilisk lion and another dragon. They represent heresy plague war and famine.

The Mariensaule has witnessed many events. In 1854 the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed here. Kaiser Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth attended the ceremony. In 1939 the column was moved to a cellar in Klosterneuburg-Kierling. After restoration Cardinal Theodor Innitzer reconsecrated it in 1946.

Interestingly the Mariensaule is absent from a scene in “The Third Man.” Despite the clear view of Am Hof square the column is not visible.

Take a moment to admire the Mariensaule. Read the inscriptions on its base. They reveal more about its rich history. The square surrounding the column hosts events including a Christmas market.

Explore the area. Visit nearby cafes. Enjoy Viennese pastries. The Mariensaule stands as a lasting symbol. It embodies Vienna’s resilience and artistic flair. It is a must-see landmark. It reflects the city’s deep historical and religious roots.
