She chose Weimar for its rich cultural heritage. The city was the heart of German Classicism the birthplace of Goethe Schiller Herder and many other literary and musical giants.
The Marie Seebach Stiftung opened in 1895. Initially it housed 14 residents. It quickly expanded to accommodate more. The home survived numerous challenges including World War I hyperinflation World War II and the subsequent communist era in East Germany. Its survival is a testament to the enduring power of her vision and the dedication of those who managed it through tumultuous times. Even the Nazi regime couldn’t completely extinguish the light of the Seebach Stiftung. Emmy Sonnemann-Goering wife of Hermann Goering added to the complex. This extension however reflected the Nazi ideology by being exclusively for “Aryans.” The foundation continues to thrive. It’s now a vibrant senior living community that offers a rich cultural program.
Today the Marie Seebach Stiftung remains unique. It’s the only senior home in Germany specifically for actors and actresses. It demonstrates that artistic legacy can extend beyond performance. It’s an enduring legacy for a woman who found a way to shine even in the face of profound loss.
