Built upon foundations laid by Bishop Hugo between 983 and 990 Mariä Geburt in Höchberg boasts a rich history. This pilgrimage church stands proudly in Höchberg’s heart a testament to enduring faith. The original church proved too small as the pilgrimage to Höchberg flourished around 1300. A new church was constructed towards the end of the 15th century. This impressive structure included a late Gothic choir and the lower four stories of the current tower. Propst Johann von Allendorf of St Burkard played a significant role in this ambitious project. Further renovations between 1583 and 1585 were overseen by local priest and builder Johann Henffling.
Throughout the centuries Mariä Geburt grew into a thriving pilgrimage destination. Princely bishops Johann Gottfried von Aschhausen and Philipp Adolf von Ehrenberg actively supported this religious fervor in the 17th century. Under Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg the church’s nave was extended in the 1690s. The tower received a new Baroque-style dome. The south portal still bears Guttenberg’s coat of arms. Generous donations from pilgrims ensured a well-funded church treasury during the 18th century when the pilgrimage reached its zenith.
Bishops Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim and Franz Ludwig von Erthal oversaw significant renovations between 1771 and 1788. The church interior was largely renewed in the waning Baroque and Rococo styles with some elements of Classicism. A new sacristy was also added. The new altars were consecrated in 1774 by Würzburg’s auxiliary bishop Johann Anton von Gebsattel.
As Höchberg’s population grew in the 19th century the single-nave church became insufficient. In 1882 Pfarrer Alois Schmitt established a building fund to finance an expansion. Seven years after his death Pfarrer Valentin Hußlein started the construction. The church’s choir remained untouched during this major renovation completed in 1908. The consecration ceremony for the enlarged Mariä Geburt was performed by Bishop Ferdinand von Schlör on October 12 1908.
The most recent exterior renovation took place in 1986/87. The church was painted light yellow with red sandstone accents. The interior was renovated in 1990 and given an ochre-toned base coat. The stone elements were highlighted with a red sandstone color.
Mariä Geburt is more than just a church. It is a living testament to centuries of faith devotion and architectural evolution. It is a beautiful pilgrimage site that continues to draw visitors to Höchberg. It is a site of faith a place of history and a true gem of Würzburg’s heritage.
