Founded in 1911, the Maret School whispers stories of transformation. It began as a small French primary school, the brainchild of Marthe Maret. Imagine a young Marthe, blind since the age of 18, yet driven by a vision to enlighten young minds. The Maret School initially catered to both girls and boys, fostering a diverse and international environment. The three Maret sisters, Marthe, Louise, and Jeanne, each with their own unique teaching experiences abroad, poured their passion for global education into the school’s foundation. Originally located in a bustling section of Washington D.C., the Maret School eventually found its home at 3000 Cathedral Avenue. This move in 1952 marked a pivotal moment in the school’s history, providing ample space for its growing student body. Maret School continued to evolve, opening its Upper School to boys in 1953. Under the leadership of Margaret Williams for 18 years, the school flourished. Later, Peter A. Sturtevant Sr. guided Maret School for two decades, overseeing the expansion of athletic, artistic, and academic facilities. Maret’s motto, “Noscere Vivere Est: To Learn is to Live,” embodies its commitment to intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning. This private institution, serving grades K-12, boasts a vibrant community of 650 students. The school prides itself on its diversity, with over half the students and a significant portion of the faculty identifying as People of Color. The Maret School fosters a strong sense of belonging, where students are encouraged to explore their interests and try new things. The school provides over 149 co-curricular and extracurricular activities, nurturing well-rounded individuals. From its humble beginnings as a French primary school, the Maret School stands today as a testament to its founders’ vision. It’s a place where students not only learn but also truly live, embracing the joy of discovery and the power of community.
