Marcellin College Randwick began in 1923. The Marist Brothers founded it. They followed the vision of French priest Marcellin Champagnat. Archbishop Kelly saw the need for a boys’ school in Randwick. Land was acquired on Alison Road. Dr. Sheehan laid the first stone in November 1922. This stone is now part of the College Wall.
The first headmaster was Br Walstan Curtin. He welcomed the first students in January 1923. Initially, the brothers traveled from Darlinghurst and Hunters Hill. Br Aquinas later bought a house next to the college. This became the brothers’ living quarters. The Marist Brothers have managed the college since then.
In 2013, Marcellin College celebrated its 90th anniversary. A new sculpture was erected in the courtyard named Eternity. Col Henry sculpted it. It was blessed at the 90th Year Gala Dinner.
Major capital works began in early 2014. These included a new library and learning spaces. A multi-purpose space replaced the Year 7 rooftop playground. A new canteen was added. Landscaping improved the bottom yard. Food Technology and Hospitality facilities were created. There was also a Drama performance space. Alterations were made to the Marist Centre. The works were completed by the start of the 2015 school year.
Br David Hall finished his term as Headmaster at the end of 2014. Mr. John Hickey became the first lay Headmaster of the college. Mark Woolford is the current principal. Marcellin College has consistently achieved strong academic results. In 2005, Christopher Beshara achieved a perfect Universities Admission Index score. The Daily Telegraph ranked Marcellin College 78th in the top 200 schools in New South Wales in 2007.
Marcellin College was a member of the Metropolitan Catholic Colleges sports program. It competed in various sports. Many students have reached elite levels in their sports, especially in rugby league and swimming.
Marcellin College Randwick has produced many notable alumni. Charlie Bell was the former CEO of McDonald’s. Br Charles Howard FMS was the Superior General of the Marist Brothers. Most Rev David Walker was the Bishop of Broken Bay. Mitchell Butel and Luke Carroll are actors. Jon Cleary is an author. Peter James is a cinematographer. Lionel Bowen was the Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. Braith Anasta and many others are rugby league players. Michael Cheika is a rugby union coach.
