Originally inhabited by the Darug people Maraylya’s story begins long before European settlement. The Darug were the custodians of this land their clans’ way of life largely lost to history. Sadly little remains of their detailed use of the land. The area was later known as Forrester after Robert Forrester a landholder granted 30 acres at Mulgrave Place in 1794.
But the name Maraylya which is believed to have Aboriginal origins came later. In the 1920s a local Progress Association made the change. The meaning remains unknown a mystery echoing the area’s rich but obscured past. Maraylya’s connection to the land is palpable. Cattai Creek flows through it leading towards the expansive Cattai National Park. The natural beauty surrounds the suburb.
The western section of Maraylya experiences flooding after heavy rain. Runoff from Scheyville National Park contributes significantly to this. The water flows into Longneck Lagoon before reaching the Hawkesbury River. This reminds us of the power of nature in shaping Maraylya’s landscape and life.

In 2020 a small southern portion of Maraylya was separated. It became the new suburb of Gables. Maraylya continues its unique existence. It holds onto its rural charm its blend of nature and history.
