Fancy a journey into one of Toronto’s pioneering mixed-use complexes? That’s the Manulife Centre. It stands proudly at the southeast corner of Bay and Bloor streets. This is the heart of the Mink Mile.
The Manulife Centre isn’t just a building. It’s a landmark. Its story began in 1970. Construction finished in 1974. Manulife Financial developed it. They remain the owners today. Clifford and Lawrie Architects designed it.
Originally, the Manulife Centre hosted Bretton’s department store. It occupied 60,000 square feet. Creed’s spanned 38,000 square feet. Harridge’s was also a tenant. These were luxury retailers. Sadly, all three eventually went bankrupt and closed.
Today, the Manulife Centre thrives with new ventures. You’ll find Birks and Indigo Books here. Bay Bloor Radio has been here since the centre’s opening in 1946. It’s a testament to the centre’s enduring appeal.
Did you know there’s a tunnel? It connects the basement to Holt Renfrew. That’s located at 50 Bloor Street West. This makes shopping seamless.
The Manulife Centre also boasts Canada’s first flagship Eataly location. Over the Rainbow, a fashion retailer, calls this place home too. You can even find a Shoppers Drug Mart here.
The Manulife Centre comprises more than just retail. It includes a 51-story residential tower. This tower has 800 luxury suites at 44 Charles Street. There’s also a shorter tower at 55 Bloor Street West.
Getting here is easy. The tower is served by Bay station on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth. Tunnels provide access to Bloor–Yonge. This is Toronto’s busiest subway station.
In 2021, Manulife Investment Management completed an extensive redevelopment. This revitalization included a glass façade. It also added 35,000 square feet of retail space. The entrances were redesigned to be fully accessible.
The Manulife Centre unveiled the “Creating Firsts” campaign. It celebrates the complex’s unique mix. Office, retail, and residential spaces coexist here. It highlights the commitment to first-in-class service.
With 285,000 square feet of retail space, the centre houses 25 shops, services, and eateries. These include flagship locations for Birks, Indigo, and Loblaws.
GMP Marmie Graniti oversaw a major renovation of the central lobbies. B+H Architects aimed to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the spaces. They wanted to maintain the building’s character. Calacatta Caldia marble was used. It brought brightness and sophistication to the interiors.
B+H and MdeAS Architects redesigned the building’s podium. The sleek glass system gives the building new grandeur. Updated lobbies and redeveloped circulation enhance the experience.
Considered one of Canada’s first mixed-use destinations, the Manulife Centre continues to evolve. It is blending its rich history with modern innovation. It remains a vibrant hub in Toronto’s Bloor-Yorkville area.
