Established in 1930 the Manly Art Gallery & Museum stands proudly. It’s the oldest metropolitan purpose-built regional gallery in NSW. This impressive building wasn’t always an art gallery though. Originally an outdoor concert pavilion it underwent a clever transformation. The removal of a proscenium arch made the adaptive reuse possible. The Chief Justice of NSW Sir Phillip Street officially opened the newly adapted building. Even then the Manly Art Gallery & Museum already held 200 exhibits. These included 79 paintings and 62 historical photographs.
The Manly Art Gallery & Museum boasts a remarkable collection. It houses over 6000 objects. These span a range of media from paintings and ceramics to documents and photographs. The gallery’s collection of Australian ceramics is particularly extensive. It also holds 130 works by the renowned artist Antonio Dattilo Rubbo. He played a significant role in the gallery’s early years. In 1939 he generously donated 100 works. These included his own paintings and works by other notable artists. His contribution led to the creation of the Dattilo-Rubbo Room an annex dedicated to his work. Upon his death he further bequeathed more paintings and a substantial sum to the Manly Art Gallery & Museum.
Many other artists and benefactors have contributed to the gallery’s impressive collection. PS Garling’s 1947 donation included works by George Washington Lambert and William Piguenit. Lady Askin’s major bequest in 1984 enabled the ongoing display of ceramics. The Manly Art Prize from 1962 to 1984 also contributed significantly to acquisitions. The gallery’s collection continues to grow through donations and acquisitions. It includes contemporary and early Australian works. There are also some international artists represented. The collection highlights the rich artistic heritage of Australia.
Since 1982 the Manly Art Gallery & Museum has expanded its scope. It became a museum of beach culture and the history of Manly and the Northern Beaches. The museum has a significant collection of swimwear. These items illustrate changes in fashion and technology. They also reflect shifting social attitudes. Today the Manly Art Gallery & Museum offers a wide range of programs and exhibitions. It remains a vibrant cultural hub in Manly. It serves as a center for the visual arts on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Its continued success is a testament to the vision and generosity of those who established it.
