What if I told you that the pursuit of knowledge has a home in Mandalay? Right here, before Mandalay University, we encounter a beacon of learning in Upper Myanmar. Mandalay University, also known as the University of Mandalay, stands as the oldest and largest university in the region. It’s the second oldest university in all of Myanmar, a testament to its enduring legacy. Established in 1925 as Mandalay College, an affiliate of Rangoon University, it has weathered the storms of time and political upheaval. Imagine the hushed halls of the college during World War II, forced to close its doors in 1942. Yet, like a seed dormant in winter, it re-emerged, reopening in 1947, ready to cultivate young minds once more. Mandalay University gained its independence in 1958. This marked a turning point, not just for the university, but for Upper Myanmar, which now had its own dedicated center for higher education. The University Education Act of 1964 brought further changes, shifting Mandalay University’s focus to liberal arts, sciences, and law. This specialization refined its purpose, establishing its identity as a hub for these fields of study. The university offers a wide range of programs, from undergraduate Bachelor’s degrees to postgraduate Master’s, doctoral programs, and diplomas. Nineteen main departments and a supporting economics department explore the breadth of human knowledge, from anthropology and archaeology to zoology and law. In 2017, a national survey placed Mandalay University at the top of arts and science universities in Myanmar, recognizing its commitment to research, training, student well-being, and the quality of its faculty. Mandalay University’s library, the largest academic library in Upper Myanmar, houses a wealth of knowledge. With over 186,000 English-language books and 94,000 books in Myanmar, it fuels the intellectual curiosity of its students. A new library, completed in 2013, stands as a modern testament to the university’s dedication to learning. As you stand here, before the gates of Mandalay University, consider the countless lives shaped within its walls. From writers and poets to politicians and government officials, the alumni of Mandalay University have contributed to the rich tapestry of Myanmar’s history and culture. Mandalay University continues to evolve, forging international collaborations and participating in global projects like CHINLONE, a program focused on modernizing and internationalizing Myanmar’s higher education system. This spirit of progress ensures that Mandalay University remains a vital force in shaping the future of Myanmar.
