Manassas Baptist Church

From the ashes of slavery, a beacon of faith emerged. Manassas Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit. It represents the unwavering pursuit of spiritual freedom. Manassas Baptist Church was born from the dreams of newly emancipated men and women. They yearned for a place to worship and find solace. In July 1872, on the grounds of an old schoolhouse, a small group gathered. Guided by Reverend Marshall Downing Williams, they laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the community. Among them were Sister Dorinda Miles, her foster daughter Lydia, Brother William Jackson, Brother Willis W. Alexander, Brother Jared Naylor, and Brother Frank Gaskins. These pioneers of faith held the first service of the newly organized church on the second Sunday in October 1872. Their initial sanctuary, a humble structure on Center Street, was dedicated in 1879. Land for the church was generously donated by Isaac Baldwin. Years later, in 1905, Baldwin again showed his support by donating $800. This contribution allowed the church to secure its present site, dedicated that same year. Manassas Baptist Church continued to grow under the leadership of various pastors. Each leader left an indelible mark on the church’s history. From Reverend Daniel Lomax to Reverend Erasmer Lewis, Reverend Arthur Harry Stewart Johnson, Reverend Frank L. White, Reverend Robert Benjamin Kirkland, Reverend Albert E. Davis, and Reverend Leroy Gilbert, each pastor nurtured the congregation’s spiritual growth. In 1981, Reverend Dr. Clark A. Houston initiated the construction of a new sanctuary. This modern edifice, dedicated in 1990, stands as a symbol of the church’s progress and commitment to serving the community. The church became a significant part of the Walking Tour of Old Towne Manassas Historical Tourist Sites. Manassas Baptist Church continues to thrive under the guidance of its current pastor, Reverend Keith A. Savage. He has instilled a vision of “Moving the Kingdom Forward through Faith” and established a new logo, symbolizing the church’s ongoing evolution. Today, Manassas Baptist Church offers a diverse range of ministries and outreach programs. It remains a vibrant hub of faith, serving both its local community and reaching out to those in need nationally and internationally. It stands as a living testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community.
