The British tried to expel the pirates. A battle between the British Navy and Captain Finn occurred in 1721. It took place between Pirates Bay and Tyrrells Bay. The British captured Finn and his men.
In 1763, the Treaty of Paris made the island British. Land was sold to those who could cultivate it within two years. Fortune-seekers came from Britain, especially Scotland.
During the American Revolution, a battery was established. It had two cannons. This protected the island from American pirates. The French later captured the island in 1781. Tobago remained in French hands until 1793.
After Emancipation, freed Africans settled on Congo Hill. They kept their African cultural practices alive.
During World War II, the Americans built a base at Flagstaff Hill. This brought more migrants from Grenada.
