Reaching toward the sky, the Man Kam To Control Point stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s dynamic history. This border crossing is not just a checkpoint. It’s a place where stories of trade, migration and political change converge.

The Man Kam To Control Point is located in the New Territories. It marks the boundary between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in Guangdong. The Chinese port across the border is called the Wenjindu Port. This was the first vehicular clearance border crossing in Hong Kong. Before 1985, it was the only vehicular link between Hong Kong and China.

Imagine the bustling activity here before 1985. All vehicles traveling between Hong Kong and China had to pass through this single point. It was a vital artery connecting two worlds. The Man Kam To Control Point facilitated the movement of goods and people.

In 1976, a new concrete bridge replaced the old wooden one that spanned the Sham Chun River. This upgrade was necessary. The old bridge had deteriorated. In 1984, a second concrete bridge was built slightly upriver. These bridges symbolize progress and the growing importance of this border crossing.

More changes came in 2003. As part of the Sham Chun River training works, a new four-lane bridge was constructed. The two older bridges were then demolished. This modernization ensured smoother traffic flow and better infrastructure.

The Man Kam To Control Point has faced challenges too. In January 2020, it closed all border crossing services except for freight trucks. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The closure highlights the need for vigilance and adaptability in the face of global crises. Fortunately, the border checkpoint reopened on January 8, 2023.

This place has witnessed significant historical events. The Hong Kong-China border has transformed over time. It once divided the British Empire and Qing China. Later, it separated a waning imperial power from Nationalist and then Communist China. After the 1997 Handover, it became an internal border. It separates Hong Kong from the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

Even today, the Man Kam To Control Point plays a crucial role. It facilitates trade and travel between Hong Kong and mainland China. Though not as busy as other crossings, it remains an important part of the transportation network.

Think about the people who have passed through here. Traders. Migrants. Families. Each crossing tells a story of hope, opportunity or reunion. The Man Kam To Control Point is more than just concrete and steel. It is a place of human connection.

So as we stand here, remember the history beneath our feet. The Man Kam To Control Point is a symbol of Hong Kong’s past, present and future. It is a reminder of the ties that bind Hong Kong and China. It is also a testament to the resilience and adaptability of this dynamic region.
