Furniture design. Cabinetmaking. Upholstery. Have you ever wondered about the journey of a piece of furniture, from an idea to a tangible object? Right here at Malmstens Linköping University, that journey unfolds.

Malmstens Linköping University is more than just a school. It is a place where tradition meets innovation. It is a campus where students learn the art of furniture design and creation.

Carl Malmsten a famous furniture designer founded several craft schools. He was a significant figure in Swedish interior and design history. Malmstens on Lidingö is now part of Linköping University. Capellagården on Öland and Nyckelviksskolan on Lidingö also stem from Malmsten’s vision. He wanted to show how practice and theory support each other.

At Malmstens Linköping University, education is hands-on. The university offers three-year bachelor’s programs. These programs cover furniture design, cabinetmaking, and upholstery. After graduating, students can pursue a master’s degree.

The campus boasts well-equipped workshops, studios, and a library. Here, students hone their skills. They learn the techniques and traditions of their craft. The university has around 65 students and 16 employees. It belongs to the Department of Economic and Industrial Development at Linköping University.

The school has evolved over time. It started as Olofskolan’s workshop in 1930. This was part of the Olofskolan founded by Carl Malmsten. In 1948, it became Malmstens Nyckelviksverkstadsskola. Later, it was named Carl Malmstens Verkstadsskola CMV. For 60 years, the school was located in Södermalm, Stockholm.

Bodals gård houses Malmstens LiU. The building was renovated and integrated into the campus in September 2009. John Mattson Fastighets AB owns and manages the premises. They established a memorial fund for the school. The fund supports education and artistic development. It provides scholarships and contributes to the library.

Gillberg Arkitekter designed the new building. The inauguration took place on September 18, 2009. Crown Princess Victoria, Mille Millnert, and Paul Lindquist attended.

Malmstens Linköping University continues Carl Malmsten’s legacy. It educates future designers and artisans. It ensures the traditions of Swedish furniture design live on.
