Hidden within Prague’s Old Town lies Malé Kamensko a small square brimming with history. It’s a place where centuries whisper secrets through the stones of its buildings.

Malé Kamensko wasn’t always the charming square we see today. In Roman times merchants from French lands settled here. The square then lay outside the Old City walls. For a long time it served as a bustling market square. This lively market place eventually lost its medieval charm. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries the buildings surrounding Malé Kamensko were rebuilt. They took on their current forms. The square’s ancient appearance changed.

A part of the Royal Way once passed through Malé Kamensko. This historic route connected the Old Town to Prague Castle. Today Malé Kamensko acts as an extension of the Old Town Square. It offers a tranquil respite from the crowds.

The square boasts a well-fountain dating back to the 16th century. This is the oldest preserved fountain in all of Prague. Look closely at the wrought-iron lattice. The date 1560 is etched into it. Notice the angelic figures and the gilded Czech lion crowning the structure. These were added later in the 17th century.

Among the buildings surrounding Malé Kamensko is the Rott house. Its neo-Renaissance facade is a testament to artistic skill. Mikoláš Aleš painted it using his own designs. Built in 1896-1897 it stands on the site of a much older 15th-century structure. Vincent Rott’s company commissioned this building. It became a department store with a trading hall and basement warehouses. Look closely at its facade for floral motifs and scenes depicting crafts and agriculture.

Malé Kamensko is surrounded by other notable buildings. Some include the House of the Golden Horn the House at the Minute the Richter House and many others. Each building has its own unique history and story to tell. Each contributes to the square’s captivating atmosphere.

Malé Kamensko though small in size holds a significant place in Prague’s history. It’s a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Take your time. Explore its charming corners. Let the stories of this little square captivate you.
