What if stones could speak? They would tell tales of the parish of St Maksymilian Kolbe in Warsaw. This church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living history.
The story begins in 1965. Parishioners first petitioned communist authorities to build a church. Their request was denied. Undeterred they found a small space. It housed a makeshift chapel and catechism classes. Father Franciszek Lupiński led the way.
Later in 1970 authorities closed the initial space. The location shifted to a building at Kolada Street 16. Father Bogumił Sikorski became the catechist. He also celebrated masses. A small community grew. Ministrants altar servers and other groups formed.
The year 1975 marked a turning point. The Blessed Sacrament was permanently housed at Kolada 16. It became a true chapel dedicated to Blessed Maksymilian. Father Sikorski resided there too. The spiritual life of the community flourished.
Then came a pivotal visit in 1975. Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński the Primate of Poland celebrated mass. He inspired the community. His presence bolstered their resolve. Authorities ordered the chapel’s closure. The parishioners responded with a powerful act of faith. They held a vigil protecting their sacred space. Nightly adoration of the Blessed Sacrament became a symbol of their determination.
In 1977 authorities finally conceded. They granted permission to build a church but didn’t specify the location. A suitable plot was secured in 1978. The construction commenced in 1979. Its design mirrored the tragic death of their patron St Maksymilian Kolbe in Auschwitz.
The cornerstone itself was unique. It included a piece of brick from the Auschwitz crematorium. It also contained ashes from the crematorium at Brzezinka. In 1980 Cardinal Wyszyński laid this symbolic cornerstone.
A decree by Cardinal Wyszyński officially established the parish on January 1 1981. Father Sikorski was named the first pastor. The first procession of Corpus Christi followed in June 1981.
Years of dedication followed. The church’s completion in 1999 marked a monumental achievement. Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz presided over its consecration. The parish continues to thrive a testament to the unwavering faith of those who built it. Their determination mirrored the life of their patron St Maksymilian Kolbe. The church stands as a beacon of faith and resilience a fitting tribute to a remarkable saint.
