“Maisinicú” whispers a name etched in Cuban history. Here, near the Guaurabo River in Trinidad, stands a monument. It commemorates Alberto Delgado, known as “El Hombre de Maisinicú”.

Alberto Delgado was an agent of the State Security. He was assassinated on April 29, 1964. Counter-revolutionary groups committed this vile act. Delgado’s undercover work led to the dismantling of significant bands. These groups were active during the fight against bandits.

Initially, only a few family members attended his burial. Three years later, on April 28, 1967, “El Enano” emerged from silence. He was recognized as a hero who died defending his homeland.

Gerardo Hernández of the Five, remembered Alberto Delgado’s example. It inspired them. Even from a United States prison, they stood with the anonymous heroes fighting for Cuba.

The new generation of fighters reaffirmed their loyalty to the Revolution. They were inspired by Delgado, a fighter of Mambisa and rebel lineage. He died like a hero. He never revealed his mission.

Julio Luis Jiménez spoke about “El Hombre de Maisinicú”. He risked his life to strike hard against band leaders. These leaders had assassinated literacy teachers and farmers in the Escambray region.

The documentary “Maisinicú, medio siglo después” (Maisinicú, Half a Century Later) was released. Mitchell Lobaina directed it. The documentary pays tribute to the film “El hombre de Maisinicú” (1973). Manuel Pérez directed that older film.

Lobaina’s film aims to introduce the original movie to young people. It highlights the importance of rediscovering it. “Maisinicú, medio siglo después” revisits the filming of the classic Cuban film. It interviews the main filmmakers. It brings the audience closer to the original locations. It shows the importance of this cinematic piece. The documentary screened in several cinemas across Cuba.

The story of Maisinicú is a powerful reminder. It reminds us of sacrifice, heroism, and the fight for a nation’s ideals. This place stands as a testament to the courage of Alberto Delgado. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Cubans.
