It began as a humble settlement, founded on December 8, 1560, by the Jesuit priest Manuel de Paiva. Initially known as Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Main District of Guarulhos played a crucial role in defending the boundaries of São Paulo de Piratininga Village from the Tamoios, an indigenous tribe. Its strategic location, bordered by the Tietê River and surrounded by other villages, made it a vital defensive point. Fast forward to 1880, the Main District of Guarulhos gained its independence from São Paulo, becoming Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Guarulhos. It later adopted the name we know today. The Main District of Guarulhos experienced a period of rapid growth in the early 20th century. Railroads and the power electricity system were established. Requests poured in for telephone systems, industrial building permits, and improved public transportation. The Main District of Guarulhos also holds a key piece of Brazil’s infrastructure: the São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. Originally the São Paulo Air Force Base, transferred to Guarulhos in 1945, it has since become one of the main airports in Brazil and a significant driver of the city’s growth.
