In 1957 Sephardic Jews from Casablanca and Tangiers arrived in Toronto. They formed their first group Yamim Noraim at the YMHA. This was the beginning of the Magen David Sephardic Congregation. The Magen David Sephardic Congregation a warm and welcoming synagogue has served the community for over 65 years. It’s a place of worship and social events for families.
The congregation initially met at the YMHA on Spadina and Bloor. As Toronto grew the Magen David moved north to Viewmount Avenue. Maurice and Elise Benzacar were among the first families. They arrived in 1957 with their infant son. They helped build the congregation. They were pioneers instrumental in establishing Magen David.
Maurice Benzacar worked tirelessly. He helped thousands of new immigrants. He found them homes jobs and schools. He volunteered for JIAS Jewish Immigrant Aid Services. He even became its Director of Settlement. He guided over 30000 newcomers into Canada. He worked with devotion and commitment to the community. His work extended beyond his position. He provided advice and support.
Elise Benzacar also played a vital role. Together they secured 10 McAllister Road the current location of Magen David. This building became a place of worship. It was a home for a growing community. The Magen David Sephardic Congregation continues to thrive. It offers daily prayer services and weekly classes. It hosts a Children’s Program on Shabbat. It welcomes over 150 families. The congregation is a testament to the dedication of its founders. It represents the strength and resilience of the Sephardic community in Toronto. It’s a place where people find hope and a sense of belonging. It is a legacy of faith and community. It is a beautiful example of what can be accomplished.
