Seven thousand seven hundred and seventy-three souls. That’s how many people called Maerne home in 2014. Imagine a village nestled on the flatlands beside the Marzenego River. This is Maerne. Its name whispers of ancient origins. Some say it comes from the Latin “maternu” inherited from the mother referring to a family estate. Others point to the root “Mad” signifying marshy areas. That’s how Maerne was. A place of watery meadows.

Maerne’s story stretches back to 1026. A document mentions land donations to Venice’s Santa Marta monastery. A testament to Maerne’s existence. In 1177 a notable named Jansegaldino from Maerne swore an oath to the Bishop of Treviso. The village wasn’t defenseless. Documents describe a “Contrà di Torre” a defensive structure near the church. This church. A testament to Maerne’s enduring spirit.

The church. It’s a magnificent example of neo-Gothic architecture. Dedicated to the Chair of Saint Peter it was consecrated in 1851. That same year a precious Bazzani organ found its home. Later a Tamburini organ joined it in 1972. Twentieth-century renovations transformed the interior. Side altars vanished. The baptismal font moved. Yet the spirit of Maerne remained. The church reopened in 2006. Inside are paintings by Antonio Beni. A glimpse into Maerne’s artistic past.

The church’s history is entwined with Martellago’s. For centuries Maerne’s parish was ecclesiastically subject to Martellago. That changed in the sixteenth century after the Council of Trent. Politically Maerne followed Mestre. First under Treviso’s rule then under the Venetian Republic. Napoleon’s troops ended that in the late eighteenth century. In 1805 Maerne briefly became the head of a municipality including Martellago. Igniting a long-standing rivalry.

Beyond the church lies the Barchessa dei Querini Stampalia. The last vestige of a once grand holiday home. A reminder of Venice’s powerful Querini Stampalia family. The building stands neglected but retains the charm of Venetian villas. Palazzo Verdi Pavanello Casa Carraro Ca’ Bembo’s rustic building and Villa Avogadro degli Azzoni stand as silent witnesses to Maerne’s layered history. These structures silently tell tales of noble families and simple country life.

And finally there’s the Parco dei Laghetti. A green expanse of 54 hectares. Created from former clay quarries. Four lakes. A playground. A restaurant. A nature center. It’s a testament to Maerne’s present and its future. A place where the past meets the present. A place where history and nature meet. A place called Maerne.
