Founded in 1872 Macedonia Baptist Church boasts a rich history. It began as a Sunday school in a stable loft. This humble beginning speaks volumes about the church’s enduring faith. Twenty-three members from Union Baptist Church formed this new mission. They remodeled the stable adding seats and floors. The first meeting was held on September 24 1874. Remarkably it was a racially diverse gathering. White Baptists were invited and attended. Mr J W Weishampel moderated the meeting. He explained the Baptist Manual the guiding principle. Officers were elected including Deacons W C Lawson and Leander Jones. Encouragement came from several pastors and community members. L Minor recorded these proceedings.
On November 5 1875 a council of nine Baptist churches approved the mission becoming a church. Deacon W C Lawson received a license to preach. Macedonia joined the Maryland Baptist Association. A new church was built and dedicated on June 24 1876 at 1617 West Saratoga Street. The cost was $3000.00. W C Lawson was ordained and elected the first pastor on August 25 1878. He served until his death in 1893. During his pastorate the membership grew. The debt was reduced. The church became a significant spiritual presence in the community. It even ran a school for Black children.
Several pastors followed each leaving their mark. Rev Augustus B Callis oversaw the completion of the new building. He also established the Willing Workers missionary group. Dr Daniel Glasco Mack’s leadership saw further growth. He organized the Ladies Missionary Society and the first Boy Scout Troop for Black children in Baltimore. He also helped establish the Baptist Aged Home. The church moved to its current location in 1925. This move was a significant event marking a new chapter for the Macedonia Baptist Church. The church paid off its debt during a period without a pastor. The Ways and Means Committee led these efforts. The committee’s hard work saved over $10000.00.
Dr Willard L Clayton served as pastor from 1946 to 1987. He oversaw significant improvements to the church building including a new sound system and air conditioning. He also started outreach programs like the Food Bank and Clothes Closet. Dr Marvis Proctor May became the fifth pastor. His time saw the start of the Treasures Dance Ministry and the Audio Video Tape Ministry. Deacon Gerrard Allen provided crucial leadership during transitions. Rev Darron McKinney served as pastor until 2018. Rev Jonathan M Wade became the seventh pastor in 2020. His leadership guided the church through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Macedonia Baptist Church stands as a testament to perseverance and faith a beacon of hope for the community it serves for over 150 years.
