Sheikh Yusuf’s legacy whispers through the sands of Macassar. A small town near Strand and Somerset West, Macassar holds a rich history intertwined with the Muslim community of South Africa. Macassar’s story begins with the Strand, where its first inhabitants originated. The town’s namesake, Sheikh Yusuf of Makassar (spelled with a “c” here), found his final resting place in this area. Exiled from his Indonesian homeland by the Dutch in 1694, Sheikh Yusuf arrived at the Strand. His followers, mainly fishermen, eventually settled in nearby Mosterds Bay, finding Macassar’s waters less inviting for their trade. They named the area after their leader’s birthplace, Makassar, in his honor. Macassar today is a predominantly Coloured community. Many residents still work in the fishing and boatmaking industries, echoing the livelihoods of Sheikh Yusuf’s original followers. Macassar is also home to the Macassar Dunes Conservation Area. Part of a vital coastal dune system and a biodiversity hotspot of the Western Cape, these dunes face ongoing challenges from activities like cattle grazing and off-road vehicle use. The delicate balance between preserving this natural wonder and the impact of human activity continues to shape Macassar’s story. Within Macassar lies the kramat, or shrine, of Sheikh Yusuf. This sacred site draws members of South Africa’s Muslim community, who venerate Sheikh Yusuf as the founding figure of Islam in the Western Cape. His legacy continues to resonate in Macassar, a town named in his memory and forever linked to his story.
