Journey with me back in time to Ma Wan Park. This park is more than just a green space. It’s an island haven brimming with history and nature. Ma Wan itself is a small island. It sits between Lantau and Tsing Yi. Did you know it measures just one square kilometer?
Ma Wan’s story stretches back thousands of years. The earliest settlers arrived around 3,000 BC. They were believed to be the Chan clan. They migrated from the Tsing Yi area. Archaeological digs have uncovered ancient daily items and tombs. They tell tales of these early inhabitants.
Fast forward to more recent times. Ma Wan became a quaint fishing village. But in the mid-1990s, big changes arrived. The Lantau Link project connected Hong Kong International Airport to the city center. This spurred development on Ma Wan.
Today, Ma Wan Park is a highlight. It’s part of a larger development. It was established by Sun Hung Kai Properties. The park includes Noah’s Ark. It features attractions that teach children about respecting the Earth. Interactive displays foster a sense of care for nature. People of all faiths are welcome here.
Kids can expend their energy at Adventureland. They can skid down the slides of Fun Fun Playland. Then, they can grab a bite at the Harvest Restaurant. There’s also a garden filled with life-sized animal statues. These stand in for the pairs of creatures saved from the great flood.
Ma Wan Park also boasts themed gardens. They feature quirky designs. These gardens take you on a journey around the world in plants. Check out the South American Garden. It mimics a Mexican village. It even has mini-exhibits on coffee bean crops.
If you visit during autumn, keep an eye out for butterflies. You can find them fluttering in the Butterfly Jive area. Don’t miss the Rainbow Wall. Also explore the enchanted Sweet Garden. These spots offer vibrant splashes of color, both painted and planted.
For a glimpse into the past, explore the Ma Wan Heritage Centre. It’s located in Ma Wan Park. The Heritage Centre showcases cultural treasures unearthed on Ma Wan. These include ash kilns from the Tang Dynasty. There are also brick kilns from the Tsing Dynasty. See objects from Ma Wan’s people in the late Neolithic period. It’s a look at how early residents lived.
Before you leave, take in the view from Tai Leng Tau Hill. It’s at the southern end of Ma Wan. It rises 69 meters tall. Many call it the best viewpoint. From here, you can see Tang Lung Chau Island. Gaze out at the Ma Wan Channel. Admire the Tsing Ma Bridge. The path to the top is simple. Follow the low-key stairway from the Ma Wan Fire Station. The high point is just a 20-minute walk.
