“Step right this way. Let’s explore the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal”. It’s a gateway between two worlds. The Ma Tau Tung terminal stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s vibrant connection with Macau and southern China.

The Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal is more than just a transport hub. It is a place where cultures converge and journeys begin. Known by many names it is also the Macau Ferry Terminal, Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Pier, or Shun Tak Heliport. This terminal plays a vital role in connecting Hong Kong to the region.

Ferries have linked Hong Kong and Macau for a long time. They date back to the early days of the Hong Kong colony. In the mid-20th century, ferries departed from the old Macau Ferry Piers. These steamships like Tak Sing and Fat Shan took about four hours to reach their destination. The Western Market was also part of this historic site.

The Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal faced a temporary suspension. From February 4, 2020, until January 8, 2023, ferry routes were halted. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The terminal has two island piers. Each pier features several ferry docks. Enclosed pedestrian bridges connect these docks to the Shun Tak Centre. The Shun Tak Centre houses ticketing and departure facilities. Above the inner pier you’ll find the heliport. The Hong Kong Vessel Traffic Centre sits above the outer pier. It monitors vessels in Hong Kong waters.

The Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal primarily serves Macau. Services also operate from the Hong Kong-China Ferry Terminal and Hong Kong International Airport.

Two companies provide ferry services to Macau. TurboJET goes to the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal. Cotai Water Jet goes to the Taipa Ferry Terminal. Both offer frequent services during the day. TurboJET also offers overnight trips. The journey takes about one hour.

Several companies offer services to ports in Guangdong. Destinations include Shekou and Nansha. Other services to Guangdong depart from other terminals.

The Shun Tak Heliport is located above the inner pier of the terminal. It has two helipads and a customer lounge. The original heliport was built in 1990. An expansion project in 2008 added a new helipad and passenger lounge.

Sky Shuttle helicopters use the heliport. They provide scheduled service to Macau. Flights run frequently using AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters. The journey time is about 16 minutes. Sky Shuttle also offers charter services to other regional airports.

Each ferry passenger pays an improvement fee. Helicopter passengers aged 12 or above pay an improvement fee and aviation service fee.

The Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal is a public transport hub. The Sheung Wan MTR station is nearby. Several bus termini, a minibus area, and a taxi pick-up area are also present. The Hong Kong Tramway has stops across the street.

The Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal is a vital link. It connects Hong Kong with Macau and beyond. Its history and modern facilities make it an essential part of Hong Kong.
