Five hundred years ago, the Cheung clan put down roots in Lok Ma Chau Village, near Ma Chau. They journeyed from Dongguan in Guangdong province, seeking a new home. Ma Chau itself, nestled against the Sham Chun River, holds a unique position in Hong Kong. It’s a vital link between Hong Kong and mainland China, a major border crossing point for both pedestrians and vehicles. Ma Chau sits within Hong Kong’s Frontier Closed Area. This area was created to control immigration. Access is restricted, requiring special permits. However, those crossing the border are exempt, provided they leave the area immediately after immigration procedures. Interestingly, a little southwest of Ma Chau you’ll find the Mai Po Wetlands. In the 1930s, a mining rush swept through the area near Ma Chau. A company sought a license to mine for wolfram, antimony, silver, gold, and even tin. The venture ultimately failed, leaving investors with empty pockets and the mine’s location a mystery. This mining endeavor adds another layer to Ma Chau’s rich history. This area, now a key border crossing, once held dreams of striking it rich. The lost mine serves as a reminder of the booms and busts that have shaped this region.
