Can a hardware store birth a theatrical dream? Absolutely! The Lyric Stage in Boston stands as a testament to this unlikely marriage. This isn’t just any theater. The Lyric Stage is Boston’s oldest resident theater company, a title earned through decades of dedication to the art form. Founded in 1974 by Ron Ritchell and Polly Hogan, the Lyric Stage first charmed audiences on Charles Street. Imagine a small space above a bustling hardware store, filled with the energy of actors bringing classic plays to life. That was the Lyric Stage’s humble beginning. By 1976, they were producing plays like “The Importance of Being Earnest” in this unique venue. The Lyric Stage wasn’t content to stay small. In 1990, they embarked on a search for a new home, finally settling on a forgotten auditorium within the YWCA building in Back Bay. The transformation was complete by 1991. The Lyric Stage opened its doors in its current location on Clarendon Street with a vibrant production of “Red Hot & Cole”. The Lyric Stage’s commitment to nurturing local talent is a core principle, established by the founders and continued by later leaders like Spiro Veloudos. Under his leadership, the Lyric Stage became known for its ambitious productions, even staging large-scale musicals in its intimate space. His signature Sondheim Initiative brought ten Sondheim musicals to the Lyric Stage over twenty years. The Lyric Stage’s impact goes beyond the main stage. In 2016, they opened Veloudos Hall, a rehearsal space available year-round to local arts organizations. This dedication to fostering the arts extends to their educational programs, now expanded after a merger with City Stage Co. From performances at the Children’s Museum to playwriting festivals, the Lyric Stage ensures that the next generation experiences the magic of theater. So, the next time you find yourself at the Lyric Stage, take a moment to appreciate its journey. From a space above a hardware store to a beloved Boston institution, the Lyric Stage continues to inspire and entertain.
