Tucked away on the western slopes of Hong Kong Island lies a verdant escape. I am talking about Lung Fu Shan Country Park. This smallest of Hong Kong’s country parks offers a surprising respite from city life. Established in 1998, this 47-hectare park is more than just a green space. It’s a journey through history and nature.

Lung Fu Shan means “Dragon Tiger Mountain”. The park’s densely vegetated slopes provide a scenic backdrop. They contrast with the residential and commercial districts below. Morning walkers and picnickers find solace here. Lung Fu Shan sits north of Pok Fu Lam Country Park. Hatton Road marks its eastern boundary. Harlech Road defines its southern edge. A covered conduit constructed by the Waterworks Office borders the north and west.

Now picture this. You are walking along tree-shrouded heritage trails. Sunlight dapples through the leaves. The air is fresh and clean. This is forest bathing at its finest. Pik Shan Path connects to Lung Fu Shan Country Park. It invites you to immerse yourself in nature’s sights and sounds.

Did you know Lung Fu Shan is home to the disused Pinewood Battery? This military site dates back to 1903. It stands as a silent sentinel of the past. Interpretive signage tells the battery’s story. The Pinewood Battery Heritage Trail leads you through this historic site. The old sea-facing fort sits 307 metres above sea level. It once commanded excellent sea views. It was the highest of all coastal defence batteries in the city. Air-defence fortifications were added in the 1920s. They became part of the city’s Second World War defences. Japanese artillery heavily shelled the battery. It was later abandoned in 1941.

The Lung Fu Shan Fitness Trail offers a longer hike. It stretches 2750 metres. The trail starts at Pinewood Garden. It passes the Pinewood Battery. It meanders through barbecue sites and shelters. It ascends a flight of steps and a steep road. The entire hike takes about an hour.

Lung Fu Shan is also an ecological haven. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has planted native trees here for decades. The Hong Kong Gordonia displays stunning white blossoms. Over 115 bird species find refuge in the lush woodlands. Keep an eye out for the Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker. You might even spot the East Asian Porcupine. Or perhaps Pallas’s Squirrel.

The Lung Fu Shan Environmental Education Centre promotes environmental awareness. It was established in 2008. It is a collaboration between Hong Kong University and the Environmental Protection Department. The centre organizes BioBlitz events. These events engage the community in Citizen Science. Participants observe and record the park’s biodiversity.

As you stand here on Lung Fu Shan, take a moment to appreciate the panoramic views. The View Compass offers excellent vistas of the western territory. You can see Victoria Harbour sparkling in the distance. Lung Fu Shan Country Park is a place where history, nature, and community converge. It’s a reminder that even in a bustling city, peace and tranquility can always be found.
