Whispers of history linger in Luk Keng Bay. Picture this tranquil bay nestled in Hong Kong’s northeastern corner. Luk Keng Bay isn’t just a pretty waterfront. It’s a place where the past whispers through ancient ancestral halls. The Wong Chun Yu Ancestral Hall stands proudly. It was built during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. The Chan Nam Tak Ancestral Hall another testament to time was likely constructed during the Qianlong reign. These halls bear witness to generations of families. The Wong Chan and Lam clans called Luk Keng home.

Luk Keng Bay was once a bustling hub. Goods traveled from its pier. They journeyed across the water to Shenzhen. From there they reached markets further inland. The bay was vital. It was a key transportation point by both land and sea in the Sha Tau Kok area. Imagine the constant activity the coming and going of boats laden with goods. In 1910 around 12500 people passed through the Nam Chung-Luk Keng area each month. Some carried goods. Others used the road to travel south towards Kowloon.

But Luk Keng Bay holds more than just historical trade routes. Hidden on a 120m hill overlooking the Starling Inlet is a World War II defense network. It consists of trenches and 14 pillboxes. Built by the Japanese using forced local labor it was originally thought to defend against an Allied landing in the Mirs Bay Area. Scholars now believe its primary purpose was suppressing local anti-Japanese activities and infiltration from the mainland. These pillboxes and observation posts stand today. They are a stark reminder of a darker chapter in the bay’s history. They are listed as Grade II historic buildings.

Beyond the remnants of war Luk Keng Bay boasts incredible biodiversity. It’s surrounded by Feng Shui woodland. The area is home to Hong Kong’s largest freshwater swamp. It supports a diverse range of habitats including freshwater streams mangroves and brackish wetlands. Over 50 dragonfly species and around 64 butterfly species thrive here. The area even hosts the endemic dragonfly species Macromidia ellenae. Rare animals such as the scarlet dwarf dragonfly and black-faced spoonbill have been spotted here. The contrast between the bay’s rich wildlife and Hong Kong’s urban landscape is striking.

Today a quieter peace settles over Luk Keng Bay. While many villagers moved to urban areas or emigrated the bay remains. It remains a testament to the enduring power of history nature and the resilience of those who have called this special place home. Luk Keng Bay is more than just a bay. It is a living breathing story. It’s a story waiting to be discovered in every whisper of the wind every rustle of the leaves and every glimpse of its rich history.
