“A shanty town?” That’s what one anthropologist called Lugnet. Today, we see parts of Hammarby Sjöstad. But let’s peel back the layers of time and uncover Lugnet’s story.

Lugnet, near Stockholm, wasn’t always apartments and cafes. Once, this area was an industrial hub. It was a place where people worked and lived.

Imagine a community so unique it resembled a shanty town. This is according to an anthropologist who studied Lugnet. It may be hard to believe now, but little was written about it. Lugnet existed in its own world.

But, in the 1990s, Lugnet began to decay. Before it was erased and replaced, Lugnet became a graveyard for stolen cars. It sounds like something out of a movie.

However, there is also another Lugnet to tell you about. Not far from here, another Lugnet existed as a feldspar mine. Mining began there in 1911. It ended in 1967.

This Lugnet was a world away from stolen cars and decay. It was a place of industry. Workers extracted feldspar from the earth.

Think about the lives of those miners. They toiled underground. They provided resources that helped build Sweden.

We’re standing at a crossroads of histories. This Lugnet is now part of Hammarby Sjöstad. But memories linger. The echoes of industry and community remain.

Lugnet reminds us that places change. They evolve. What was once an industrial area is now a residential neighborhood. The mine shut down long ago.

Yet, the stories of Lugnet persist. They remind us of the people who lived and worked here. They remind us of the area’s unique past.

So, as you explore this area, remember Lugnet’s different lives. Remember the shanty town. Remember the feldspar mine. Remember the stolen cars. These are all parts of its story.

Lugnet is a testament to time’s passage. It is also a symbol of Stockholm’s constant reinvention. Let’s carry these stories as we continue our tour.
