In the heart of Baden-Württemberg lies Ludwigsburg. It’s a town steeped in history and brimming with Baroque splendor. Ludwigsburg is not just a town. It’s a testament to the vision of Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg. He dreamt of a grand city to complement his magnificent palace.

Ludwigsburg Palace. It’s hard to miss this behemoth of Baroque architecture. The palace dominates the Ludwigsburg skyline. Construction began in 1704. Duke Eberhard Ludwig envisioned a hunting lodge. His ambition soon outgrew this humble plan. The palace complex exploded into 18 buildings and 452 rooms. It became one of the largest Baroque palaces in Europe. The duke, however, never saw his dream fully realized. He died in 1733. The final touches were being put on the Neuer Hauptbau.

Ludwigsburg itself became the capital of Württemberg in 1718. This was a calculated move by the Duke. He offered tempting incentives. Free land. Tax exemptions. Religious freedom. He even offered free building materials. The Duke, however, was picky. Prospective citizens needed a certain income level. He wanted the best for his ideal city. Despite the perks, Ludwigsburg remained smaller than Stuttgart. Even by the Duke’s death, its population was only half that of Stuttgart. The ducal capital moved back and forth between the two cities. Finally, in 1775, Stuttgart became the permanent capital. Ludwigsburg’s importance waned. It even earned the nickname “Grasburg.” Overgrown and neglected, its grand avenues became a shadow of their former glory.

But Ludwigsburg was not destined to remain in obscurity. Duke Frederick II declared the palace a summer residence in the late 18th century. He breathed new life into the town. He transformed the gardens. The formal Baroque style gave way to the fashionable English landscape garden. This was the era of Classicism. Ludwigsburg was once again in vogue. The city also played a role in Napoleon’s ill-fated Russian campaign. Thousands of Württemberg soldiers marched from Ludwigsburg in 1812. Few returned.

Today, Ludwigsburg is a thriving town. It’s known for its Baroque palace, its beautiful gardens, and a surprising claim to fame. It’s home to the world’s largest piggy bank. This quirky landmark is a testament to Ludwigsburg’s playful spirit. The city embraces its history. It also looks to the future. Ludwigsburg is more than just a pretty face. It’s a town with a story to tell. A story of ambition. Of resilience. And of a giant piggy bank.
