Can a place exist without houses? Lucas Heights poses this very question. Lucas Heights is a unique Sydney suburb, existing solely for scientific and industrial purposes. It’s home to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) main research establishment. This facility has a fascinating history, originally built by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission. It housed the historic HIFAR research reactor. Lucas Heights became the center of Australia’s nuclear research. In 2007, HIFAR was shut down and replaced by the OPAL research reactor. OPAL boasts cutting-edge neutron radiation facilities. It draws scientists from around the globe. Many researchers come to use its advanced capabilities. In 2005, HIFAR was even identified as a potential terrorist target. This highlights the significant role Lucas Heights plays in nuclear science. Interestingly, the area originally designated as residential within Lucas Heights was renamed Barden Ridge in 1996. This was done to boost real estate value, separating the residential area from the perceived stigma of the nuclear reactor. Before its association with nuclear research, Lucas Heights had a different identity. It was named after John Lucas Senior, a flour miller who received a land grant in 1823. He established a water-driven mill, processing corn from Illawarra farms. Small ships would navigate the waterways, bringing the harvest to the mill. Today, Lucas Heights continues to serve an important function. It hosts a waste management facility, separate from its nuclear activities. It also has a unique climate. Due to its elevation, Lucas Heights experiences a climate that’s a blend of oceanic and humid subtropical conditions. This makes it a bit of a weather anomaly in Sydney. So, while you won’t find homes in Lucas Heights, you’ll discover a hub of scientific advancement and a unique piece of Sydney’s history.
